Probing effects of lexical prosody on speech-gesture integration in prominence production by Swedish news presenters

This study investigates the multimodal implementation of prosodic-phonological categories, asking whether accentual fall and following rise in Swedish word accents (Accent 1, Accent 2) are varied as a function accompanying head eyebrow gestures. Our purpose is to evaluate hypothesis that prominence production displays cumulative relation between acoustic kinematic dimensions spoken language, especially focusing on clustering gestures (head, eyebrows), at same time if lexical-prosodic features would interfere with this relation. materials comprise 12 minutes speech from television news presentations. The results reveal significant trend for larger fo rises when movement accompanies accented word, even larger an additional present. observed rises encode phrase-level prominence, but not falls primarily related lexical prosody. Moreover, manifested differently different categories 1 versus 2 one two stresses). provides novel support cumulative-cue assumption essentially multimodal, well line idea gesture integrated system.
